Teesside University Engineering

The North East of England hosts major international automotive, aerospace, engineering design, manufacturing and civil engineering industries, as well as a growing number of companies involved in renewable energy. Teesside is also a major international centre for the chemical and process industries, and home to some of the most advanced pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the world.

We work closely with employers from a wide range of engineering sectors, with many involved in designing and delivering our curriculum to ensure our engineering programmes remain relevant to industry and meet employer requirements. Our courses incorporate best practice from across the world to provide you with one of the best learning experiences available for engineering students.

Accreditation

The UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) has standardised the academic requirements for CEng and IEng registration:
CEng:
• accredited BEng (Hons) degree plus appropriate master’s degree or
• accredited BEng (Hons) degree plus approved Further Learning to master’s level or
• accredited MEng
IEng:
• accredited bachelor’s degree or
• HND/foundation degree plus approved Further Learning to Bachelor’s level

The current standard allows more flexibility for engineers with differing levels of qualifications to meet the academic requirements.

The benefits you could realise from completing an accredited degree include:
• higher earnings potential
• better job prospects – some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees
• your accredited degree is more likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is more likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Degree programmes are accredited by the professional engineering institutions under licence from the Engineering Council. A degree may be accredited by more than one engineering institution, particularly where it spans several engineering disciplines.

At Teesside University we offer accredited BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) degrees, and any new BEng (Hons) or MEng (Hons) degrees that are introduced from time to time also go through the accreditation process. We also offer postgraduate MSc awards for those wishing to achieve an intermediate BEng (Hons) award before studying for a master’s level qualification.

If you are undecided as to which programme is best for you, don’t worry. The first two years of our BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) programmes share the same modules which enable you to transfer from one to another up to the end of your second year. MEng (Hons) programmes demand higher levels of achievement than BEng (Hons) programmes, but they provide you with the opportunity to study your subjects to a more advanced level with a greater breadth of knowledge.

If you feel you aren’t ready for direct entry to Year 1 of a BEng (Hons) programme, then you should explore our range of extended degree programmes which include an integrated foundation year.
