Widening participation

We don’t want to miss out on any talent, so if students have the ability, we want them to apply. By encouraging and supporting students, as well as assessing their application fairly, we’ve been highly successful in raising the number of applications from sectors of society currently under represented in higher education.

There are lots of talented applicants who don’t believe that higher education is for them. We don’t put up barriers because of ethnicity, disability, family background or income — nor do we tolerate any other form of discrimination.

We recognise that if candidates come from a background where they’re perhaps the first in their family to apply to university, they may need some extra help. We make that process easier and make sure that everyone gets fair access to courses at St George’s.

Widening participation is more than just reaching out to under-represented communities; it relates to the whole ‘life-cycle’ of a student in higher education and involves multiple teams across the University. This covers pre-entry, through admission, study support and successful completion at undergraduate level, to progression into graduate study or employment.

Our Widening Participation team provides information to prospective students, schools, colleges and other organisations who support students, and to anyone who works in the widening participation field.
