Qualifications for Entry
The Study Abroad Office at QMUL is committed to hosting students of the highest academic calibre. Admission is based on academic merit and every application to the Study Abroad Programme is considered individually. We are happy to consider a very wide range of international academic qualifications, and a selection of these are detailed below by country. If you are submitting an application from a country not listed, or feel your circumstances are somewhat unusual and would like to discuss your application before submitting it, please contact us at email@example.com.
Students will normally need to have taken courses related to the academic subjects they intend to study at QMUL. However, it is possible to take introductory courses in other academic subjects if students have not previously studied them in their undergraduate degree. English language requirements are shown below.
English Language requirements
If English is not your first language or you are applying from a non majority English speaking country, we will require you to prove your English language proficiency by taking internationally validated tests such as IELTS. Please refer to the English Language Requirements Page which outlines the requirements for each QMUL department. If you are planning to take modules from across different departments the highest score will be required; for example if you take one Arts module and three Social Sciences modules you will need IELTS 7.0 or equivalent.
Application Sources, US Partner Programmes & Exchanges
We accept applications from four sources:
- Direct applications from students via our online application
- Via a US institution which has an agreement for Study Abroad with Queen Mary; you should consult with the Study Abroad Adviser at your home institution to see if this is the case and to check on any special application arrangements
- Through a US Study Abroad partner programme:
Arcadia University, College of Global Studies
Institute for the International Education of Students (IES Abroad)
Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler)
International Studies Abroad (ISA)
Japan Study Abroad Foundation (JSAF)
Study Abroad Foundation (SAF)
SUNY College at Brockport
You should refer to the publications issued by these organisations for application procedures.
- Through our existing exchange agreements
Please note that applications from any of these sources are considered equally on their own individual merits.
Applications for Full-Year and Autumn are received and considered from January in the year of entry until 13 July; applications for the Spring semester are received and considered from May of the year before the year of entry until 13 October. Applications will be considered after these dates if places are still available but it is in your interest to apply as early as possible as applications are considered on a rolling basis as are places on modules that pre-register.
Equal Opportunities & Special Needs
QMUL welcomes students from all over the world. Our charter states that our work shall be carried out in a spirit of tolerance, freedom of opinion, mutual concern and community service, and undertakes to avoid discrimination against any person on the grounds of religion, race, sex or politics. The university has a policy statement on Equal Opportunities in Employment, which we are actively implementing. Anti-harassment procedures have been agreed, aimed at eliminating incidents of racial or sexual harassment.
We have a wide range of services and facilities for any students who have disabilities or have special requirements during their stay at Queen Mary. Please ensure that Harry Gibney in the Study Abroad Office (firstname.lastname@example.org) is made aware of any requirements you may have (this includes extra time in examinations for students who have dyslexia).
[Staff were] extremely efficient, helpful, and supportive. Helped ease a lot of my stress before arriving and once I got here.
