The national Students Volunteering Week 2017 takes place from 20-26 February with the aim of bringing together individuals and organisations across the UK to celebrate the achievements and impact of student volunteers in their local communities; encouraging and inspiring more students to volunteer.

The Students’ Union has organised a number of events around the week aimed at Plymouth University students. See below for details.

Student Volunteering Week Drop In

Sessions are on Monday to Thursday at 13:00-16:00 (venue: UPSU Volunteering, The Hive)

Come and discover the volunteering opportunities we have available – try something new, make new friends, explore the surrounding area, and boost your CV. With over 50 different community partners and organisations, there will be something for everyone.

RSPB School Outreach Volunteer – Drop In Sessions

Tuesday 21 February, 10:00-12:00 (venue: The Hive)

Gemma Dunn (RSPB Outreach Officer) will be holding two Information Sessions on Tuesday 21st February, in the Hive, for anyone who is interested in running nature sessions in primary schools. Just drop in at any point between the two time slots above.

What does this role involve? You will be supporting Gemma to teach primary school children about different types of birds and their habitats. All resources and session plans are provided. Full training provided. You will receive a RSPB top and name badge, as well as travel expenses. Some knowledge of wildlife and working with children would be an advantage, as would an enthusiasm for working outdoors. Come along to the drop in session to find out more.

SLV’s Animal Conservation Trip to the Barn Owl Trust

Wednesday 22 February, 09:00-17:00 (venue: Ashburton – transport provided)

This month we’ll be working on the trust’s nature reserve and we’ll be learning how to hedge lay and put it into practice on some of the hedges within the reserve. We’ll also have a chance to meet the wild barn owls and tawny owls that live at the trust’s sanctuary. We should get the chance to meet Bailey, a tame owl who we’ll hopefully see flying up close. If you are interested in coming along, please add your name to the signup in the Hive within UPSU. SLV’s Green Team – Tree Planting with Moor Trees

Wednesday 22 February, 13:00-18:00 (venue: Scorriton on Dartmoor – transport provided)

Today we’ll be going to Scorriton up on Dartmoor to plant some native trees. Transport is provided by minibus from the SU. The trip is free and most importantly there will be free tea and cake! Visit the UPSU event page for more details or email

Volunteering with SLV’s Special Olympics

Wednesday 22 February, 17:30-20:00 (venue: Kitto Centre. Meet in The Hive within the SU)

Fancy escaping your studies for a couple of hours, having some fun and helping disabled adults in sport? Special Olympics is a Student Led Volunteering Project run every Wednesday. It looks great on your CV and helps make a difference within the local community, plus you log three volunteering hours per session to put towards one of UPSU’s Volunteering Recognition Awards (50 Hours, 100 Hours and 200 Hours). Sign up for each weekly session in The Hive within the SU today!!

Plymouth Primary Multi Sports Event with Relays@UPSU

Thursday 23 February, 13:00-15:00 (venue: Plympton Academy – transport provided)

Primary School Sports Event Leaders – Key Stage 1 Multi Skills Event. Relays@UPSU is recruiting a team of student volunteers to support the Plymouth School Sports Partnership to run their primary school sports events. Roles will include setting up equipment, registering schools, running basic multi skills competitions and recording results. Transport will be provided, please meet in The Hive at 12:30 for a 12:40 departure. Volunteering Pop Up Awards

Friday 24 February, 13:00-14:00 (venue: Illusion, UPSU)

Come along to the UPSU Volunteer Pop Up Awards to celebrate some outstanding student contributions to Volunteering. We will be awarding and celebrating students who have achieved their 100 and 200 Community Volunteering Hours. The awards will be presented by Melanie Joyner, Director of Student Services at Plymouth University.

SLV’s Green Team – A Trip to Stover Canal

Saturday 25 February, 08:30-17:30 (venue: Newton Abbot – transport provided)

Need some hours towards your Plymouth Award? Or just want to get out and do some good? Why not volunteer? Today we’ll be going to Stover Canal (Newton Abbot) to continue the preservation and restoration of the canal by assisting in the major task of scrub clearance (burning stuff!) and removing larger trees and plants (lumberjacking!). SLV’s Green Team – A Trip to Burrator Reservoir

Sunday 26 February, 12:00-17:00 (venue: Burrator Reservoir, Dartmoor – transport provided)

To celebrate Student Volunteer Week the Green Team is putting on an extra trip to work with the South West Lakes Trust at Burrator. The trip will take place on the afternoon of the 26th of February.
