Northumbria University MSc Physiotherapy

This course is for anyone looking to develop their skills to become a competent physiotherapy practitioner. This physiotherapy pre-registration, two-year degree has been designed to allow graduates from related subject areas to develop the skills to become competent physiotherapy practitioners. Clinical placements occur in both years and are usually between 2 and 6 weeks’ duration. The course also reflects the Government’s commitment to inter-professional learning in health and social care. The two year physiotherapy course allows students to explore the physical, biological and behavioural sciences that underpin physiotherapy practice and develop critical, analytical, reflective and practical skills that can be applied to a wide variety of clinical situations. Assessments include traditional examinations, poster presentations, group assignments, written assignments, practical assessments and videos. Graduates find employment in an increasingly diverse range of healthcare settings including the NHS, the private sector, sports clubs and voluntary organisations.

Modules

This module builds on the practical and transferrable skills introduced within ?Core Concepts and Skills for Physiotherapy? enabling students to critically explore the pathology, management and practical intervention of patients within the core areas of physiotherapy, related to neurological rehabilitation and musculoskeletal-based conditions of the spine. Teaching and learning will be primarily based around a workshop design within the academic setting, with support from resources available at the module e-Learning Portal (eLP) site. Student learning will be augmented by formative assessment comprising the completion of an e-Skills Portfolio that documents the deliberate practice and development of skills introduced within the module. Individualised written feedback will be provided for each student. This will be supported by the use of the Objective Structured Practical Self-Evaluation (OSPSE) on two occasions within the module.
