The Language Resources Centre provides a friendly learning environment for all King’s students and staff wishing to engage in independent language learning.

The LRC offers a wide variety of resources and multilingual learning advisors who are always on hand to help you make the most of the facilities available.

In addition, it offers:

Opening Times and Closures

Opening Hours – During term time

Monday to Thursday 10am-8.30pm
Friday 10am-6pm
Saturday 12:30 pm – 2:30pm (Trial until 1 April 2017)

Wednesday 22 February 2017 – all day

Facilities available

  • Laptops available to borrow by students for use in the LRC
  • Wifi access
  • Foreign language textbooks, grammar books, dictionaries and other reference material
  • Daily and weekly newspapers and magazines
  • Feature films and documentaries on DVD
  • A selection of language learning audio CDs
  • Friendly and welcoming staff to advise on how to make the most efficient use of the open learning facilities
  • Comfortable reading area

Materials are for reference only.

Students can use these facilities to supplement their class work and private study.

Summer Language Courses

Summer Language Courses 1 (1)Enrolment for 2017 Summer language courses is now open. Summer courses are available to new and continuing students of the Modern Language Centre.

Information for new students starting in Summer 2017

Option 1 – Intensive courses

  • 8 languages available: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish
  • Open at beginners level only
  • Courses run for one week only, July 17 – 21, 10.00 – 13.00 for five consecutive days at the Waterloo Campus only.
  • After completing Level 1 Part 1 in the summer, you can enrol on Part 2 in Autumn and Part 3 in Winter (evening or Saturday courses)

Option 2 – Fast-track courses

  • 11 languages available: Arabic, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Spanish
  • Open to all at beginners level only. 5 lessons are completed over a 2.5 week period
  • Lessons run from 18.00 to 21.00 at the Strand Campus only.
  • After completing Level 1 Part 1 in the summer, you can enrol on Part 2 in Autumn and Part 3 in Winter (evening or Saturday courses)
    • 3 hours x 5 evenings 18.00 to 21.00 over 2.5 weeks = 15 hours
    • DATES: Wednesdays & Mondays: 12/07/17/, 17/07/17,19/07/17,  24/7/17 and 26/07/17
    •  Thursdays & Tuesdays: 13/07/17, 18/07/17, 20/07/17, 25/07/17/ and 27/07/17

Information for current students continuing in Summer 2017

Option 1 – Students who are completing Part 3 in Summer
(Have taken Part 1 in Winter and Part 2 in Spring) 

  • Students can take part 3 of their level in Summer and complete the level. Please check the timetable for course availability. 
  • Continuing students are eligible for the ‘fast-track’ courses
  • 3 hours x 5 evenings 18.00 to 21.00 over 2.5 weeks = 15 hours
    • DATES: Wednesdays & Mondays: 12/07/17/, 17/07/17, 19/07/17,  24/7/17 and 26/07/17
    •  Thursdays & Tuesdays: 13/07/17, 18/07/17, 20/07/17, 25/07/17/ and  27/07/17

Option 2 – Students who have taken Part 2 in Summer
(Have taken Part 1 in Spring)

  • Students can take part 2 of their level (please check the timetable for course availability)  in Summer and may be able to complete Part 3 in Autumn (October 2017)

Quick facts 

I enrolled for three parts starting in Winter 2017? 

You can continue and complete the third part of your level in Summer. For example you would complete Winter, Spring and Summer terms to complete the three parts of your language level.

Any difference in content between Summer and other terms? No, Summer teaches the same content as other terms, just in a shorter time frame.
