Description

The MSci and BSc Chemistry programmes provide a comprehensive education in the theoretical and practical aspects of chemistry, and also equip students for a professional life in the ever changing environment of 21st century chemistry. To achieve these goals, the programme integrates the teaching of chemistry foundations with application of chemistry principles and techniques in a conceptually novel fashion by systematically using examples taken from the very broad range of chemical and biomedical research and practice at King’s.

The programme starts with a normal coverage of the principles of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry, with additional maths to ensure students can handle advanced physical and computational chemistry. The programme incorporates an integrated laboratory course that brings together the different strands of chemistry and applies them to a range of chemical systems.

A further optional Year’s Professional Placement can be added to this degree, for which students apply to nationally competitive year-long internships in the wide variety of professions open to our graduates, ranging from traditional chemical and pharmaceutical industries through to business, finance, law and more.   We prepare our students for their applications, starting with summer placements after their first year leading to applications for year-long internships after their 2nd year.  To access this year, students need to average 60% or better in their course, and be offered a suitable placement by an employer. After completing this year, students return to their 3rd year of Chemistry studies, to graduate after 4 years with a BSc in Chemistry with a Year’s Professional Placement.

In Year 3, increasingly more specialised modules allow students to investigate particular aspects of the application of chemical principles to contemporary global and industrial challenges.

Subject to availability, optional short research projects will be available as part of the Research Methods module in Year 3.  These projects will be carried out at King’s or in an appropriate partner institution, e.g., one of the hospitals affiliated with the College, offering students the opportunity to gain relevant professional work experience.

Research areas in which King’s chemistry academics who will be teaching on this course, flourish, include the development of the full range of modern in vivo imaging techniques, inorganic anti-cancer drugs, enzyme biomimics, biomolecular spectroscopy, computational methods, materials science and nanotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences from drug discovery to drug delivery, analytical, forensic and environmental science, and a wide range of developmental and cell biology.

Students on the BSc and MSci courses do the same first 3 years, which includes project-driven laboratory practicals in Year 3 (introduced in Year 2). Students wanting a general Chemistry degree, for instance to progress to teaching, journalism, management and similar careers, will usually opt for the BSc degree. Students wanting a full research experience that introduces them to current areas of intensive chemical research should do the MSci year, for which they will normally require marks in Year 3 equivalent to a 2:1 or 1st class degree. Transfer between these two degrees is possible up to and including the third year. Transfer from the MSci/BSc Chemistry degrees, to the MSci/BSc Chemistry with Biomedicine degrees, is possible up to and including the first term of the second year.

Teaching style

Teaching is led by the Chemistry Department who are joined by chemists whose research is embedded within different faculties of King’s, where they use their chemical expertise to advance a very wide range of medical, health, pharmaceutical and materials science. This larger group contribute to the teaching and research projects.

Teaching takes place in lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials and through extensive practical laboratory work. Our educational aim is to prepare you to continue to learn and solve problems for life, not just to pass our exams. Therefore teaching emphasis gradually shifts from supported learning and help in adjusting to university life towards self-directed learning.

The first two years concentrate upon laying down a strong basis in chemistry and supporting maths, while bringing in non-conventional aspects such as the study of chemistry in cells and integrated laboratories that combine the different areas of chemistry within experiments and applies them to biological systems. In the third year, increasing specialisation is possible through the choice of options. For MSci students, the fourth year is dominated by a 6 month research project to give you the opportunity to experience and test your research potential.

Three factors underpin your learning: first, it is increasingly research-based, so you learn not just facts but in addition you learn to test hypotheses and evaluate evidence; second, a biomedical and wider bioscience perspective pervades much of the teaching; and finally, you will be explicitly encouraged to apply your scientific understanding to the compelling wider issues now facing society and the planet we inhabit. This broader perspective of the fast-changing role of chemistry in our world is further developed by the activities supporting our Year’s Professional Placement, for which all students (whether they are awarded a year’s placement or not) are given the opportunity to meet chemists, and employers of chemists, who are pursuing diverse careers.

Structure of course and assessment

Assessment is primarily by written examination at the end of each academic year, with increasing weight given to later years of study. Increasing importance is being given to coursework which takes the form of essays, problem solving exercises and reports of practical classes, culminating in a mini-thesis for the final year research project.

Location

The programme is taught at the Waterloo Campus with some teaching nearby at Guy’s Campus.

As a large multi-faculty university, we have excellent social and sporting facilities, but above all, we are right in the centre of London.

Our three campuses along the River Thames are located in the cultural, political, financial and social heart of the capital, and offer our students the opportunity to explore art galleries, theatres, museums, markets, restaurants and cafes.

Our student societies reflect this cultural depth, in addition to the normal sporting and recreational involvement.

Information for students thinking of applying with no A-level Maths: We welcome students having no Maths at A-level, provided that they are numerically proficient and comfortable doing maths. Mathematics is fundamental to Chemistry, and is used in all their areas, with a special emphasis in physical chemistry. The importance of mathematics in the chemistry curriculum is the reason of having a specific module Mathematics for Chemists in the second term of the first year.

We recommend students applying with no Maths at A-level to have obtained at least an A at GCSE Maths or a B at AS-Maths. An indication of the mathematical exercises that you should be able to do can be found here.

Students applying with no A-level Maths will receive additional tuition during the first term of the first year of their degree to enable them to tackle the Mathematics for Chemistrymodule in the second term. This tuition will be in addition to regular lectures, workshops and laboratories, and therefore they need to be prepared to do the extra effort to succeed in their studies.

The fourth MSci year gives our students a specialised research project in current ‘hot’ areas of chemical research, with accompanying taught modules to add depth to their understanding. Transfer between the MSci/BSc degrees is possible up to and including the third year. Transfer from the MSci/BSc Chemistry degrees, to the MSci/BSc Chemistry with Biomedicine degrees, is possible up to and including the first term of the second year.

Students can further broaden their experience with an optional Year’s Professional Placement added between the 3rd and 4th years of their MSci degree, for which students apply to nationally competitive year-long internships in the wide variety of professions open to our graduates, ranging from traditional chemical and pharmaceutical industries through to business, finance, law and more. We prepare our students for their applications, which usually start with their obtaining shorter summer placements after their first two years leading to applications for year-long internships after their 3rd year. The International tuition fee for the 2017-2018 academic year is £22,800 per annum.

Please note that the International tuition fee is subject to annual increases in subsequent years of study, in line with King’s terms and conditions.

All International applicants to Undergraduate programmes are required to pay a deposit of £2,000 against their first year’s tuition fee. This deposit is payable when you firmly accept an unconditional offer to study with us, and will be offset against your tuition fees when you join King’s.
