I have been particularly impressed with the entire experience. What stands out to me is the University’s persistent and continued commitment towards bettering itself and setting academic and co-curricular benchmarks of excellence. The fact that students play an inevitable part in these efforts and are always co-constructors of change is immensely heartening, too.

Job Prospects

How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?

Am still in the first term only, so the question will be better answered towards the end of the course

Course and Lecturers

What’s the best thing about your course & lecturers?

The theoretical groundings are up to date and provide a fair representation of global issues and recent researches. Lectures are presented by different faculties depending on who suits a particular topic the best.

Student Union

What do you think of your Students’ Union? If you don’t get involved, why not?

I do feel it is very active. they have managed to provide an array of facilities and services at student friendly prices, as well.

Accommodation

If you live in university halls or private housing, what is your accommodation like?

I have opted for an Ensuite room. The room is suitably furnished for students study needs. Facilities in the hall include laundry, TV, pool table, piano, library, common room etc. The kitchen are shared by 5-8 scholars in each kitchen.

Uni Facilities

How good are your university’s facilities?

Fantastic

City Life

What’s the city life like?

London, it does not get better than this; infrastructurally, culturally and academically.

Clubs and Societies

What are the clubs and societies like?

Over 200 actually. Unfortunately my class selections do not allow me to participate in most events and get togethers at these clubs. i do however try to attend whatever academic talks organsied by some of these clubs, as and when i can fit them in my schedule

Student Support

How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).

Fantastic again. you just have to seek support whether academic, literary, psychological or career wise.

Having said what you have said would you recommend your uni?

Yes

The course is really badly organised and over subscribed, although the lecturers are very knowledgeable. I live far from campus with friends as it is cheaper. The uni actually has a lot of building work going on at the moment and it is really noisy and distracting. The best bit is the students union, because drinks are really cheap. I wouldn’t advise people to do a PGCE at IOE as it is really stressful, and some people didn’t event get placements or a placement tutors, which is what a uni should provide! In order to get a place doing a PGCE overall, make sure you are confident in your interview.

I really like the course content that I am studying, but I really don’t like the infrastructure of the uni, and how everything is organised. Just make sure you prepare to be independent in your learning and organisation. I am originally from Luxembourg and I really miss it there. The uni facilities and city life in London aren’t aesthetically pleasing, but it does the job. I am part of the uni gym, but I don’t really want to join any societies. I am hoping that after I graduate in the UK, I will get a job. It’s more likely for me to get a job in the UK than back in Luxembourg, as there are only 3 international schools that I could actually work in if I were to go back, I just need to make sure I do a lot of relevant work experience (which I would recommend everyone to do). I would also recommend students thinking of studying at this uni and doing a PGCE to talk to previous students.

Overall I enjoy my uni, but make sure you know the in’s and out’s of what you are studying. For example, one of my friends finds her course more hectic than she anticipated. I’m not too impressed with classes, I don’t think they are really well planned, and accommodation and general living is really expensive. I would really rate clubs and societies well, as there isn’t much advertised. Before you apply for uni, make sure you know what you want.

I’ve had a great experience of the IOE so far. The staff are really helpful and nice. The quality of teaching is outstanding and the lectures are actually enjoyable. Cheap drinks at the SU bar and brilliant course mates. It really is the best for teacher training.
