It is well known that the blues originated from African Americans in the deep south, however when it came to England the names associated were overwhelmingly white: The Rolling Stone, Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin to name a few. While Jimi Hendrix features in this list, as he famously moved to London, the Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll genre has, as a whole, been whitewashed.

This event aims to breakdown the whitewashing of this genre and bring to light the amazing black musicians, who not only influenced the big British bands but also played at the same time in and around London.

Unfortunately, our speaker dropped out, so this event will not go ahead as planned. However, all is not lost, as UCLU Jazz Soc have agreed to make their Monday IoE jam night Black History Month themed. So come along to the IoE bar to celebrate music of black origin, such as blues, rock ’n’ roll and jazz

UCLU has four bars spread across the Bloomsbury Campus each with its own feel, atmosphere and unique events. Click on the links below for more details.

Print Room Café

Print Room Café is a stylish café bar located at the heart of UCL campus, with outdoor seating for relaxing in summer.

Richard Mully’s Basement bar

Situated in the basement of the Lewis’s Building at 136 Gower Street, The Richard Mully Basement bar – aka “Mully’s” is our sleek venue for DJs, comedy and live music.

The Huntley

With the recent development of our Lewis’s building we have restored the site of 23 Gower Place back to its original use as a pub! We’ve tried to maintain the traditional old London pub feel but mixed it with the modern tastes of today’s cosmopolitan student.

The Institute

Nestled away on the third level of 20 Bedford Way, this bar is the spiritual home of UCL Institute of Education students and is now open to all UCLU members.

The Phineas Bar

Officially our oldest running bar and situated on the 3rd floor of 25 Gordon Street, Phineas has recently undergone a refurbishment. The disused servery area has also been opened up into a bright and fresh seating area to relax and socialise.

Book a Union Bar

If you’re a UCLU Club and Society then use this form to request the use of a Union-managed bar for your club or society. Please note that only The Richard Mully Basement bar and the Print Room Cafe are available for exclusive hire. UCLU bars are not available for external hire during term time .
