Functional Skills – English Other (Short Course / Specialist Interest) / Part Time

If you are looking to improve your skills and confidence in English or enhance your CV to progress your career, this course is for you. Whether your skills are at a very basic level, or if you are brushing up after a break from study, one of these classes will be suitable.

Many of our students have not had the chance to gain GCSE English and we can offer an equivalent qualification. If you are on another course in college and would like extra help or support with your English, this is available. You will work on your own individual English programme, at your level and at your own pace, within a small group.

We can help with course work if you are studying, or support you with your own work/personal needs. You can practise spelling, punctuation, grammar, reading skills and many other skills – all at your level. You will have an opportunity to use computers as part of your learning if you wish. (Don’t worry if this is new to you!)

You will have an assessment at the start of the course to give us an idea of your level. This is not a test, just a means of finding out what you can already do. After that, you will be assessed as you go along.Students working towards Level 1 and 2 sit an exam when they are ready. Students at Entry level will do classroom-based assessments to gain a qualification.

Many of our students use these courses as stepping stones into further or higher education. Others want to improve their confidence in the workplace, or may have their own personal reasons for improving their literacy skills, such as helping their children with homework.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Anyone who does not have an A-C pass in GCSE is welcome to join. We will assess your skills when you start and make sure you are placed in the right group.
