Quantity Surveying, BSc (Hons)


Our Quantity Surveying course offers you everything you’ll need be successful in this field. The role of a Quantity Surveyor involves all stages of the design and construction process. That includes everything from providing business strategy advice, to working with architects and overseeing the on-site construction phase. You’ll also have access to the CEMENT (Culture of External MENToring) scheme – where third year students will be linked together with professionals in the industry. This has already proved to be successful, with students gaining access to work placements, site visits and graduate employment opportunities.

Our Quantity Surveying degree is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) for the purpose of graduate membership.

Entry requirements

Year 1

  • Highers AAAB or BBBBC
  • A-Levels ABC or BBB
  • Int. Baccalaureate 29 points
  • Scottish Baccalaureate Pass

Year 2

  • A-Levels ABB
  • Advanced Highers BB plus BBC at Higher in other subjects
  • HNC A in graded unit
  • HND BB in graded unit
  • Int. Baccalaureate 34 points
  • Scottish Baccalaureate Distinction

Year 3

  • HND AB in graded units with A in final graded unit

Additional information

  • Additional information For all years, applications are welcomed from holders of non-school qualifications and mature candidates. All EU and overseas candidates will require an IELTS overall grade 6.0 (or equivalent) with no component lower than 5.5 or equivalent.

The need for quantity surveyors (QS) is vital for the efficient financial management of construction projects. As a partner university of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the School of the Built Environment is instrumental in meeting the educational needs of QS graduates by building on their previous education and experience to prepare them for the demands of this profession.

Teaching and Assessment

Our students experience a stimulating teaching environment which blends conventional lectures and tutorials with online material in our Virtual Learning Environment. Programmes are regularly reviewed by research-active staff in Edinburgh, Dubai and Malaysia to ensure that the learning material is relevant and current.

Assessment of the taught component is through a balance of examinations and coursework.

  • A relevant first or second class Honours degree, or a degree qualification, or equivalent qualification recognised by the Malaysian Government, acceptable to the University.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, then evidence of proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 is required.
