Edinburgh Campus

At our Edinburgh Campus we have a purpose-built health centre housing the Medical Centre and Dental Practice, which provides the full range of UK National Health Service (NHS) medical and dental services.

Registering as a new patient

If you would like to register as a new patient, simply visit the Health Service & Dental Practice from Tuesday 5 September till Friday 8 September between 10am till 4pm.  You can start the process now.

Services available

The department has a full complement of medical, dental and nursing staff, as well as a community team that provides services such as psychiatric nursing, midwifery, health visiting and district nursing on a sessional basis.

Once you have registered, you will have access to range of healthcare services. There is also a private (non-NHS) physiotherapy service.

Scottish Borders Campus

If you are a student based at the Scottish Borders Campus, you should register with one of the local general practices, which you can find on the NHS24 website.

Orkney Campus

If you are a student based at the Orkney Campus, you should register with one of the local general practices. Staff at the Orkney Campus will be on hand to advise you on this during your enrolment.

What is a personal tutor?

Every student has a member of academic staff allocated to them as a personal tutor who will be a key source of advice, guidance and support during your time at Heriot-Watt.  Your personal tutor is your first point of contact if you need advice on any issue, both academic and non-academic, and can refer you to other support services where relevant for non-academic matters.  Personal tutors provide a clear point of contact for you throughout your degree.

Finding out more about personal tutoring

During Welcome Week you will find out more about the personal tutoring system at Heriot-Watt as part of your induction programme.   You will be allocated a personal tutor and there will be an early opportunity to meet with them.
