Harper Adams University How Many Students

After opening in 1901 with just six students, Harper Adams has gone on to become one of the leading higher education providers in the UK. There are currently more than 4,000 students at the institution, 50 percent of whom are undergraduates. It is currently ranked in the top 10 for graduate employment in the UK.

Courses and teaching

Harper Adams’s most popular degrees are undergraduate studies in Food Science, and Agriculture and Forestry, which offer a mix of practical and academic teaching. A partnership set up in 2004 between Harper Adams and Beijing Agricultural College also offers Chinese students two different degrees that they can complete at the British university. All undergraduate courses include a 12-month commercial placement spent away from the university, where students can gain practical experience in the workplace before they graduate.

Costs

The average course costs £9,000 per year. International fees are a fraction higher at £10,200, or £3,100 during their placement year.

Facilities

The university is based in rural Newport, Shropshire.

Accommodation

Students have the option to live either on campus, in town, or in surrounding local villages. There are seven halls of residence, all within just a short distance of each other, and costs range from £5,097 for a single en suite room with three meals a day Monday to Friday, down to £3,672 for a single en suite in a self-catering hall. Weekend meals are available on a ‘pay as you go’ basis.

Education

Alongside the labs and libraries is a working farm where students receive their practical lessons. The eco-friendly Bamford Library is in the middle of Harper Adams’s campus, and the Companion Animal House offers further resources for those studying veterinary sciences, and a new molecular biology lab has just been added to the institution’s science complex.

Sport

Campus facilities include: a gym; sports hall; heated outdoor swimming pool; floodlit rugby pitch; astroturf pitches for cricket; football and hockey; squash and tennis courts; a bowling green and table tennis and pool tables. Shooting is a popular sport at Harper Adams, and the shooting ground has remote operated traps and double traps. Students can also use extensive facilities at the nearby National Sports Centre in Lilleshall.
