The Subversive Stitch was the umbrella title for two separately researched exhibitions that opened in Manchester in 1988: Embroidery in Women’s Lives 1300-1900, held at the Whitworth Art Gallery, and Women and Textiles Today, held at Cornerhouse. This is a selection of images documenting the contemporary exhibition at Cornerhouse. The original slides were lent to the Subversive Stitch Revisited web site project by the curator of Women and Textiles Today, Pennina Barnett. This important visual resource consists of 35mm colour slides taken on location at the Cornerhouse, Manchester and the Watermans Art Centre in Brentford, and the Cooper Art Gallery in Barnsley, three of the six venues of the national tour. This gallery of historic images was created from digitally restored scans, with captions provided by the artists who generously responded to our request for permission to include this work in the Subversive Stitch Revisited web site. We are especially grateful to Anne Michie, Jo Stockham, Fran Cottell, Cas Holmes, Anne Lydiat, Beryl Graham, Janis Jefferies, Kate Stockwell, Rozane Hawksley, Sam Ainsley, Sharon Kivland, Alison Marchant, Verdi Yahooda and Lyn Malcolm. We would be delighted to hear from other artists whose slides are featured here. In order to maintain a representative range of the work at the time, we have also included important artists such as Kate Russell, Jane Ray, Clare Newton, Jane Lyster, Thalia Campbell and Lesley Hanney. We would be especially grateful to hear from these artists and anyone else with further information about these works and their context.
