University passes standards exam with flying colours

A Welsh University passed a rigorous examination with flying colours.

Glyndwr University in Wrexham, which celebrated its fifth anniversary in June, was given a glowing report by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

The QAA’s Institutional Review – designed to safeguard quality and standards in UK universities and colleges so that students have the best possible learning experience – praised its quality of learning opportunities for meeting UK expectations, highlighting areas of good practice and making just four recommendations for enhancement.

Glyndwr’s Disability Assessment Centre, for example,  was judged to provide “a high level of support” for students with disabilities and other features of good practice included accessibility of information and “strong and extensive expertise” in the delivery of e-learning.

The report added that a free laptop scheme and the expansion of the University’s Wi-Fi provision had ensured “the widest student access to learning technologies available”.

With feedback from staff and students, assessors also found the University – which has campuses in Wrexham, Northop, St Asaph and London – has a “comprehensive and sophisticated range of centrally generated management information” to support strategic planning and decision making.

Vice Chancellor Professor Michael Scott was delighted with the results and proud of how far Glyndwr University has come in a short period of time.

He said: “The first five-year inspection of Glyndwr University since it was awarded its title and status as a University was rightly rigorous.

“We are delighted at the positive outcome which highlights areas of good practice and provides welcome advice and encouragement for the next stage of growth.

“The report justifies the faith that’s been placed in Glyndwr University by all of its stakeholders. Our students and staff can feel proud of the achievement of the first five years and our industrial and commercial partners, who have placed so much confidence in the university, will also be assured by this report.
