Dyslexia: screening & diagnosis
The Disability Team provides a screening and assessment referral service for students who are suspected of having an undiagnosed specific learning difficulty, which is adversely affecting their studies.
Students are invited to attend an initial meeting with a Disability Adviser At this meeting, the Disability Adviser will gather relevant background information e.g. about your educational and general background, the perceived impact of your reported difficulties on your studies, the progress you have made on your course to date etc. The Disability Adviser will also typically ask to see a sample of your academic writing, such as a marked essay. All of this information will help inform the Disability Adviser whether a student should be referred on to an Educational Psychologist for a full ‘diagnostic assessment’.
We only refer a student on to an Educational Psychologist for a full diagnostic assessment if the Disability Adviser is convinced that:
- There is evidence which suggests you do have a specific learning difficulty, and
- That without a formal diagnosis, the university will be unable to put in place additional arrangements and/or facilities, and that this would result in you being placed as a significant disadvantage.
If you are referred on to an Educational Psychologist, the cost of the diagnostic assessment will be met by the university. Please note however that if you fail to attend your appointment, or cancel within 24 hours of your agreed appointment time, you will be fined a non-attendee fee of £20. Assessments are carried out in the Positive Living & Disability Service, usually after 5pm.
If the Disability Adviser is not convinced of the need for a full diagnostic assessment, they may instead refer you to your Learning Development Centre for study skills support, or to workshops on assistive technology, which is available to all students on campus.
