Course introduction

Journalism at Edinburgh Napier University is one of the longest established and most prestigious journalism degree courses available in Britain. We’re one of the top six journalism courses in the UK, Guardian University Awards 2017. Our course provides you with a critical understanding of the legal, political, economic and professional contexts of journalistic practice.

What you’ll learn

You’ll learn to produce high quality content for newspapers, magazines, radio, TV and digital platforms in our industry standard studios and newsrooms.

You’ll gain experience with a work placement where you can apply your knowledge to a real media environment. You’ll also help to produce an annual magazine which is distributed throughout Edinburgh. You’ll be involved in sourcing and writing copy, sub-editing features, designing the layout and selling advertising space. This gives you vital experience and a professional publication that you can show to prospective employers.

You’ll gain an in-depth knowledge of copyright, publishing, business, finance and law that will inform your journalistic work. You’ll also develop transferable skills in communication, IT, presentation, team work, leadership and project management.

This is a full-time course studied over four years. You’ll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, specialist workshops, practical work in our studios and independent study.

You’ll get the opportunity to specialise in your chosen area of journalism in the final year. We also have excellent links with universities worldwide and you’ll have the opportunity to study in Sweden, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands or the USA.

Our curriculum is developed with employers, industry contacts, media organisations, and media partners such as STV, giving you the chance to have your work regularly broadcast.

Course content is updated regularly to ensure that it remains relevant and innovative. That’s why our graduates hit the ground running in professional journalism and are able to operate around the globe.

Train to become a journalist with this intensive, practical course that combines traditional methods and developing technologies to meet the demands of a multimedia industry.

Course introduction

This course offers a dynamic, practice-focused multimedia programme, closely linked to industry. We combine traditional methods with new and developing technologies to train you in multimedia journalism.

You’ll learn a range of practical skills and leave with reporting and production expertise for print, online, magazine, television and radio. You’ll also develop an understanding of social media and convergence issues.

You’ll learn through practical experience, both in our news rooms and on an industry placement and we also support you in getting your work published and broadcast.
