Types of part-time jobs

Ormskirk is a relatively small town and every employer receives many student applications or CVs. Improve your chances of finding work by travelling around the area. The nearest large towns with many shops, bars, restaurants etc. are in Southport (take the 375 or 385 bus from Ormskirk Bus Station) and Aintree (take the train in to Liverpool – the 4th and 5th stop) Other nearby towns are Skelmersdale and Wigan which can be also reached by the 375/385 bus. Burscough – just to the north of Ormskirk – also has some major retailers as well as bars and restaurants.

There are lots of opportunities to work on campus.  The main roles are as “student guides” or “student ambassadors” for various departments.  Academic departments often recruit their own students.  However, our Education Liaison team take on around 100 student guides and ambassadors.  If you came for an Open Day, or a Visit Day, you will have been taken around campus by our student guides.  When we have events on campus, there will also be opportunities to work as casual catering assistants, and other roles too.   Departments like the Library, Edge Hill Sport, the Arts Centre, as well as the SU, also have several jobs to offer students.  If you keep looking at our vacancy system, these departments will be advertising these jobs and roles there.  For latest jobs information follow us on Twitter @ehuworks

These are typical student jobs and there are many available in the West Lancashire and North Merseyside areas. Aintree Race Course is a few minutes away from Ormskirk by train into Liverpool. It is a major conference and events location and has many of these types of jobs throughout the year, but especially up to Christmas, at race meetings such as the Grand National and for summer weddings an prom nights. We have a great relationship with Jockey Club Catering who advertise via us for these hospitality, catering and bar work roles. Contact the Edge Hill Works team for more details. This company also has vacancies at Haydock Race Course in the area between Wigan and St Helens.

You can improve your chances of successfully applying for catering roles by gaining a Basic Food & Hygiene qualification at a local college. This usually takes the form of a one day course with a test at the end of the session. You may pay between £60 and £90 for this course. Most caterers regard this as essential, although some will train staff themselves.

There are many Edge Hill students who work or have worked in these roles and in stewarding/kiosk jobs for the local football clubs in Liverpool, Manchester and Wigan, and also the rugby clubs in St Helens, Warrington and Wigan. Again contact the Edge Hill Works team for more details.

CAUTION: if you have to use public transport and are working late at night, make sure you can get back home before the train and bus services end for the day. Always travel with friends.

Many retailers, supermarkets and restaurant chains recruit extra staff in the months leading up to and including Christmas. The Careers Centre will alert students as and when these vacancies go live via our Twitter page and also on our Vacancy Service. Keep checking this Service so you don’t miss out! Top tip: check which outlets are near to where you are living or can travel to, and if they are recruiting. You can do this by speaking to the branch directly – employers usually appreciate it when you make personal contact rather than by e-mail. Each company’s websites will tell you where the nearest outlets are.

Edge Hill Works do not advertise these types of jobs, as we do not recommend students going to private addresses to sell products or to raise funds for charities, with targets to reach before they get paid. This places too much pressure on students and the public.
