Durham University Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at Durham is one of six departments that make up the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. We are an open and friendly department, which accommodates work in ‘analytic’ and ‘Continental’ Western philosophical traditions. We have research expertise in the history of women in philosophy, from the fifth to the twentieth century. Our home on Old Elvet includes our department library, common room, post-graduate study room and our own garden. The department is home to the Centre for Humanities Engaging Science and Society

Welcome to Durham Philosophy Department

Situated in the heart of a beautiful Cathedral City, the department occupies two charming former townhouses. It is surrounded by cafes, pubs and restaurants and is a few minutes’ walk from the scenic banks of the River Wear. We have a departmental library, common room and post-graduate study room, as well as our own garden!

Philosophy at Durham is notably pluralist. Both in teaching and in research we cover an unusually diverse range of areas. For example, both ‘analytic’ and ‘continental’ styles of philosophy are well represented.
