Durham University Amateur Boxing Club has grown from a small, but committed group of boxers into a thriving university level team. The Club has had numerous successes at BUCS and the EUBS tournaments over the years, securing both gold and silver medals. We are an ABA affiliated club and train according the rules of amateur boxing, which include: 3 x 2 minute rounds with full head protection, mouthguards and 10oz gloves.
Training includes work on technique, physical conditioning, and sparring (optional). It is an extremely safe sport with full medical checks for boxers and full protection used in sparring and competitions. The Club trains at the Hild Bede East gym. The schedule consists of 2 fitness sessions and 3 sparring sessions per week – a compulsory commitment for those who intend to compete. The essential equipment is provided, but members are advised to have their own handwraps and mouthguards.
We strongly encourage new members to join the boxing club regardless of ability or experience. Additionally, we offer comprehensive training, which enables newcomers to become familiar and gain fighting experience quickly.
Our aim is to produce a team capable of representing Durham University at BUCS and competing against local clubs as well as other university clubs. Moreover, we annually enter members into a Durham Charity boxing show. In 2014 the club raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The Club also caters for those who simply wish to enjoy the health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity. Furthermore, we organise regular socials, cultural outings and opportunities to participate in community outreach projects.
