Interviews are normally part of the application process for:

  • Courses leading to a specific profession
  • Courses that are particularly competitive
  • Courses which require you to demonstrate a particular skill or competence, e.g. music or art
  • Niche courses such as footwear design The interview is an important part of the selection process. It is an extension of the UCAS form and determines if an offer is made and the level of offer made. It also gives admissions tutors the chance to learn more about you, and equally provides you with an opportunity to find out more about the course and university. Interviews can be crucial if, come results day, your grades aren’t as expected as tutors may still offer you a place if you performed well at your interview.

Before the interview

Make sure you know:
  • What the format of the day will be
  • Where and when the interview will take place
  • What you need to take with you (e.g. portfolio, certificates etc.) Different types of interview:
  • Auditions
  • Group exercise
  • Panel interviews


Ensure you have done your research. You should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the subject are and a sound knowledge of the course/university
  • Explore current issues and developments in the subject area/profession
  • Expand on your UCAS application and personal statement
