About the Jets

About us The Coventry university Jets are an amateur British University American Football Team. We were formed in September 2009 and started competing in BUCS in September 2011. We have been supported by the Coventry Jets (Senior Team) from the first season, the majority of our extensive coaching staff are from the senior team, most of whom are past/present GB players/coaches. We have settled around 50/60 playing members every season. The club is also supported by a number of student roles. These roles are filled by Coventry University students and are designed to enable the student to get valuable experience whilst studying as well as benefiting the team with their knowledge and dedication to their course. The roles we have filled at the moment are Sports psychologist, Sports Therapists and a club photographer.

The Coventry University Jets were formed, officially, in summer 2009 by 6 members of the Warwick Wolves from Coventry University; Chris Hobbs, Ben Abbot, Mike Billinghurst, Ant Prigg, Mark Higham and Luke Nethercot. With only 6 players and 2 coaches pre-season, the target in the 2009 season was to establish a stable team and get into the league British University American Football League (BUAFL) by competing in an association game. The CU Jets recruited well, having over 50 members sign up to the club and managed to get all the players on the roster in kit for highly competitive training sessions with the Coventry Jets senior team. The association game was played against local rivals (and once team mates) the Warwick Wolves. The game couldn’t have gotten off to a better start with the Jets returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Unfortunately the more experienced Warwick side kept plugging away and eventually ended up scoring 2 touchdowns of their own to overtake the Jets. However, the Jets had proved they could compete with a long-established club and were inducted in to the league for the 2010 season.

First competitive season – 2010/11

The 2010 season, led by President Chris Hobbs, saw another strong recruitment leading to over 70 players sign up to the club and obtaining a 3 year sponsorship deal from Rileys Pool Bar. The season itself started well with a pre-season friendly win over the Worcester Royals and a league game win versus the Leicester Longhorns. The Jets were also competitive against some of the country’s best teams, such as a narrow loss to the Loughborough Aces.

2011/12 Season

The 2011 season, under President Mike Billinghurst, built an even stronger and more successful club, bringing in new head coach Adam Biggs along with 8 other experienced, well regarded coaches from the Coventry Jets senior team. The club competed well in the best division in the league; the Midlands Athletic Conference, registering more wins than the previous season. The season ended in elation as the Coventry University Jets won the Varsity match against the Warwick Wolves, having lost the 2 previous years, earning the Coventry University Varsity Club of the Year Award in the process. Also, having come back from a 3 touchdown deficit in the last 2 minutes of the game, the Jets picked up the Coventry University Comeback Moment of the Year as well.

2012/13 Season

The 2012 season, led by President Josh Hughes saw the CU Jets enter BUCS for the first time in our history. The club had another successful season, finishing 3-5, building a strong core group of players for the future and solidifying the foundation of the club. With a lot of senior players leaving the Jets entered the 13/14 season with just 15 returning members.

2013/14 Season

The 2013 season led by President David Copping saw a huge jump forward in our club performance. This season we have doubled our points scored on any previous campaign. And finish on the best record so far of 4-4. This was achieved with a 60% ‘rookie’ squad of players from all different back grounds and experience of the sport. The club made huge strides off of the pitch as well. The 13/14 season saw our first intake of social members and with a fantastic social calendar with joint socials, find raisers and volunteering opportunities we have really expended our club profile and are well on the way to becoming a house hold name at Coventry University. Our biggest stride this season has been being offered to join the Team Phoenix Performance programme. This is the Students Union Sports and Societies elite sport programme. This will be a huge part of our club for the forth coming season providing us with strength and conditioning sessions available to the team and individually. We will also be given guidance from a sport nutrition point of view as well as help with training programmes and progress trackers.
