Welcome to the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences – home to the largest selection of forward thinking vocational health and social care courses in the Midlands. It’s no surprise our courses in Nursing and Midwifery are ranked 9th in Guardian University Guide 2017, and four subject areas are in top 10 for the Complete University Guide 2018: Occupational Therapy, Food Sciences, Sport Science and Physiotherapy.

Schools within our Faculty include:
+ School of Life Sciences
+ School of Psychological, Social and Behavioural Sciences
+ School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health

With over 6000 students enrolled in the faculty, we make extensive use of innovative approaches to teaching and learning including podcasting, interactive online discussion, and the use of mobile technologies.

Our dedication is demonstrated through our £60 million investment plan. The new Science and Health Building, due to open to students in October 2017, will provide state-of-the-art facilities for hospital simulation, rehabilitation, clinical skills training, sport and exercise environments. The building will also include a Biosciences super-lab and a range of life sciences research facilities.

Not content just with local impact, you will have access to our worldwide links with universities and institutions, currently with active collaborations in China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Turkey.

The School of Life Sciences delivers a broad provision of science related academic themes including Biomedical Science, Sport and Exercise Science, Food and Nutrition, Sports Therapy and Forensic Science. From specialised laboratories with focus on experimentation and methodical analysis to our expert strength and conditioning suite, we believe in hands-on-learning and our facilities are the ideal environment for the study of life at every level.

About us

The School of Life Sciences delivers a broad provision of science related academic themes including Biomedical Science, Sport and Exercise Science, Food and Nutrition, Sport Therapy and Forensic Science.

Our multidisciplinary courses focus on areas including the biological basis of human health and disease, analysis of the chemical composition of materials and the evaluation and defence of forensic evidence against legal challenge.

Courses also concentrate on the application of scientific principles to the way the body functions during sport and physical activity, prevention and treatment of injuries, food science, nutrition and diet-related health issues.

From specialised laboratories with focus on experimentation and methodical analysis to our expert strength and conditioning suite, we believe in hands-on-learning and our facilities are the ideal environment for the study of life at every level.

All undergraduate courses have an option of completing a sandwich or placement year in the UK or abroad. We have strong international links and recently the School has partially funded student visits to Argentina, India, Florida, Malawi and Dublin.

Discover how our staff and students in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences are internationally focused.

Teaching is influenced not only by our provision of consultancy to external clients but our associated Faculty Research Centre, Applied Biological and Exercise Sciences, which achieved a REF2014 score in which the majority of our research was judged to be world leading or internationally excellent.
