Confucius Institute at UWTSD with the support of the Swansea Chinese Community Co-op Centre has created a new school that will provide Mandarin Chinese language training to the children of Chinese families as well as an education in Chinese culture. The school opens on 4th September 2016 and will provide classes for two hours every Sunday.

The Confucius Institute believes that children born into the local Chinese community should have the chance to nurture their Chinese roots and heritage.  They should be able to communicate in Chinese with parents and grandparents, as well has having excellent Chinese for their future employment prospects.

The Confucius Institute Chinese School will offer:

  • Hanban Chinese language curriculum
  • Mandarin GCSE and A level classes
  • Chinese language classes for children age 5 to 16 years
  • Qualified Chinese language teachers
  • Hanban YCT (Youth Chinese Test) and HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi)

Courses

The Confucius Institute offers a range of Chinese language courses for different purposes, from Chinese courses for travel and leisure, to more intensive (fast-track) courses. All courses lead up to the official HSK Chinese Proficiency exams. For those looking for an accredited course, we offer the university level Certificate of Higher Education in Chinese as a part-time two year course.

Mandarin Chinese: Beginners I

This course is aimed at students with little or no prior knowledge of the language who would like to attain a basic ability in Chinese for tourism, work visits to China or to converse with Chinese friends.

Topic areas covered by the course include greetings, numbers: age and currency; weather; ordering food; purchasing tickets; asking for directions. While the focus is on spoken Chinese, the course also introduces pinyin – the standard system of Romanized spelling for transliterating Chinese, and gives a basic introduction to recognising written Chinese characters.

The course leads to the Chinese Proficiency Test HSK 1 (optional)

Mandarin Chinese: Beginners II

This course is aimed at students who have a basic knowledge of Chinese and who would like to expand their vocabulary, grammar and topic areas for conversation while improving their comprehension of basic written Chinese.

Topic areas covered by the course tourism, daily routines, the world of work, shopping, planning social activities and celebrations. The course encourages students to start writing basic Chinese characters, while maintaining comprehension through the use of pinyin.

The course leads to the Chinese Proficiency Test HSK 2 (optional)

This course is aimed at students who have studied Chinese at intermediate level and wish to prepare for the internationally recognised HSK Chinese proficiency test. Students who pass HSK 3 may be eligible for Hanban grants and Chinese Government scholarships for one year’s undergraduate study at a Chinese University.

The course covers key vocabulary, grammar and topic areas which may be tested. Students are given exam practice each week.

Business Chinese 1

This course aims to prepare students with no prior knowledge of Chinese for the internationally recognized Business Chinese Test (BCT). The course is spread over two years, culminating in the BCT (A) exam. The course content aims to enable students to communicate in Chinese in daily life and during basic business activities. The emphasis is on listening, speaking and reading comprehension while gaining practice in writing Chinese characters through a computer keyboard.

The course focuses on key grammar and vocabulary required by the BCT syllabus and gives regular exam practice.

Course length: 1.5 hours per week, 30 weeks per academic year (three terms) over two years.

Intensive route

We offer an intensive study route for Business Chinese 1 which requires 3 hours per week over 30 weeks, leading to the BCT (A) exam
