Foundation courses

“Cardiff is a compact city, so I usually walk everywhere. You can buy halal food easily and there are lots of Arabic restaurants.”

Mohammed Mubarak Al-Mesaifri IFP Engineering

Students who have studied in the Qatari high school system will be required to take a one-year foundation course before entering our undergraduate courses.

General entrance requirements for our International Foundation Programme are as follows:

Undergraduate courses

Entrance requirements for undergraduate courses (ie bachelor’s courses) vary according to the course applied for and the background of the applicant. As a general rule, admissions tutors would ask that the following conditions be met:

  • Either: We will consider students who have taken GCE A-level examinations and the International Baccalaureate (IB) for entrance to undergraduate course.
  • Or: Students leaving high school with the Thanawyiah Aama or Tawjahiya (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) who wish to study for a degree at Cardiff University will normally be required to complete the International Foundation Programme.

Postgraduate taught courses

Entrance requirements for taught postgraduate courses (ie master’s courses) vary according to the course applied for and the background of the applicant. As a general rule, admissions tutors would ask that the following conditions be met.

Academic entry requirements

Students who have completed a first degree of four years duration with a GPA of 3.2 from a recognised university in Qatar will normally be considered for admission onto a one year master’s degree.

Postgraduate research courses

As a general rule, students applying for research courses from Qatar should be able to provide evidence that they have already carried out research, usually via the successful completion of a relevant master’s degree.

Academic entry requirements

Holders of a good master’s degree from a recognised university in Qatar will be considered.

English language

A relevant English language qualification is also required — normally a minimum of 6.5 IELTS, however, this may vary from course to course. Find more information about our English language requirements.

If you are unsure of your qualifications or entry requirements, please contact us.

Entry onto our courses will depend on the qualifications you have been awarded in Qatar and your English language ability.
