Karate stance

Welcome to the Canterbury Karate Club at Christ Church University
Karate is a Japanese martial art which uses kicks, punches and blocks. Shotokan is a style which emphasises low stances, long movements and the generation of great power.

Canterbury Karate Club was founded in 1981 and is the oldest, continuously running club in the University. Affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB), it is a non-profit making, members’ club which practices traditional Shotokan Karate. There is a strong emphasis on the philosophical and traditional aspects of martial arts training including zen. Up to thirty members train in term time (fewer during the vacations).

A typical session includes training for flexibility, training for general fitness, basic movements (kihon), patterns of defence against several opponents (kata) and some sparring (kumite). All of these are given equal importance.

To celebrate our  thirtieth birthday in 2011, we celebrated with a weekend of karate featuring five senior instructors, including world, European and national champions.  Please follow the link on the left if you would like to see what happened at our ‘weekend karate party’.

Are you considering taking up karate but are a bit scared?

Am I going to get hurt?

No one is going to hit you. It takes several sessions before you start sparring and even then it is severely controlled. Only the most senior grades do free sparring and injuries are very rare.

Do I need to be fit?

NO. …but karate training will help to make you fit.

Will I learn how to defend myself ?

Yes – but not necessarily in the way you might think.

How often should I train?

At least once a week, preferably twice and you will make fast progress by training three times per week. Training once per week means that if you miss a session, there will be 13 days from one session to the next and you can lose a lot in that time. At a rate of twice per week, you can miss an occasional single session without losing form or fitness.
