Bournemouth University Basketball
At sportBU we have men’s and women’s competitive basketball teams that compete in the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) leagues and trophy competitions.
The entire Basketball Programme is overseen by Michael Dronyk (Level 3 Advanced England Basketball Award qualified) and he is assisted by Luca Dronyk (Level 2 Qualified). Leagues & Competition Information
For the 16/17 season our men’s first team will compete in Tier 1A (top division in the West) of the BUCS League as well as the National Trophy Competition, our second team will compete in Tier 2A and The Western Conference Cup and the Women’s team will compete in Tier 1A (top division in the West) as well as the National Trophy Competition.
In 2015/16 our men’s first team finished 2nd in Tier 1A while the men’s second team also finished 2nd in Tier 2A however also made it to the semi-final of the Western Conference Cup.
Our women’s first team dominated all competitions in 2015/16 by winning Tier 2A (finishing with a points different of +237) and the Western Conference Cup (beating Bristol University 78-44 at the finals in Cardiff).
Training & Conditioning
Training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Sunday afternoons. All training is based in the Sports Hall, Talbot Campus.
As part of each team’s weekly training schedule additional specific sessions on flexibility, SAQ (Strength, Agility and Quickness) and fitness are provided by a full time Strength & Conditioning (S&C) Coach. Varsity coaches work alongside the S&C coach to identify areas to focus this sports specific training to improve physical strength, power and performance.
Partnerships & Facilities
Athletes who have played or competed at a regional, national or semi-professional standard will be eligible to Apply for a Scholarship to support them in their sport whilst at university. We also run pay and play basketball sessions in our sports hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm – 8.30pm and Thursday at 7.00pm – 8.00pm. The sessions are run during the Autumn and Spring terms and cost £2 per person per session. For more details see the Campus Sport page.
New for 2014/15 we are running a 3 v 3 Intramural Basketball league. The league will take place in the sportBU sports hall on Sunday afternoons at 12pm – 1.30pm.
