Bournemouth University 5 A Side Football
At sportBU we have both men’s and women’s competitive football teams that compete in the BUCS leagues and trophy competitions.
Our men’s football programme is managed and delivered by AFC Bournemouth. Our teams benefit from expect professional coaching from Steve Cuss (Head of AFC Bournemouth’s Community Sports Trust, Wimborne Town FC Manager, UEFA B Licence qualified) and Dan Neville (Assistant Manager of AFC Bournemouth’s Community Sports Trust, UEFA B Licence qualified).
Our ladies team are coached by Andy Boland (Level 3 qualified).
Leagues & Competition Information
For the 14/15 season our men’s first team will compete in Tier 1A (top division in the West) of the BUCS League as well as the National Trophy Competition. Both our second and third teams will compete in Tier 2A and the Western Conference Cup. Our ladies team will compete in Western Tier 2A and the Western Conference Cup.

BUCS Football 2015-2016 – Western 1A
In 201212/13 both the men’s 3rd team and women’s 2nd team reached the semi finals of the Western Conference Cup before losing to eventual tournament winners.
In 2013/14 our men’s teams had an extremely successful season with the first team winning Tier 2A to gain promotion to Tier 1A, our men’s second team coming second in Tier 2A and our men’s third team winning Tier 3A to gain promotion to Tier 2A.
BUCS and FA accreditation
In 2009 Bournemouth University were one of 10 institutions accredited with football focus status by BUCS/The FA. This allows greater support for students with regards to access to coaching qualifications and further assistance to the university in terms of funding and county FA support.
Training & Conditioning
The men’s teams have tactical and technical training 4 hours a week, plus 3 hours of fitness. The women’s teams have tactical and technical training 2 hours a week, plus 2 hours of fitness. Training venues are Wallisdown playing fields and Chapel Gate.
As part of each team’s weekly training schedule additional specific sessions on flexibility, SAQ (Strength, Agility and Quickness) and fitness are provided by a full time Strength & Conditioning (S&C) Coach. Varsity coaches work alongside the S&C coach to identify areas to focus this sports specific training to improve physical strength, power and performance.
Partnerships & Facilities
Athletes who have played or competed at a regional, national or semi-professional standard will be eligible to Apply for a Scholarship to support them in their sport whilst at university.
