Foundation Degrees

Foundation degrees at BGU are designed for people who want to gain a qualification relevant to their career working with children and young people, both in an educational or a social care setting, without them having to leave work. Typically lasting two years, these courses give the flexibility you need to develop your skills and practice in your current role.

Progression Routes

Already completed a Foundation Degree? Progress from a Foundation degree to a BA Honours degree with our progression routes in Applied Studies and Primary Teaching (with QTS).

Undergraduate Degrees

Our Undergraduate Degrees are normally three years and designed to give you a thorough knowledge of the subject area. We have recently been upgrading our academic portfolio to offer you a more comprehensive choice of courses including Sociology, Health and Social Care and Archaeology & History.

PGCE & School Direct

We offer a variety of postgraduate routes to obtain a teaching qualification. The most common are the Postgraduate and Professional Graduate Certificates in Education (PGCE) which offer an integrated academic and professional preparation for teaching, combining academic study at masters level with recommendation for EYTS or QTS. This is available for early years teaching, general primary teaching and for a range of secondary subject specialisms.

The School Direct Training Programme is school-embedded Initial Teacher Training (ITT) in Primary and Secondary schools across England. All of BGU’s School Direct places will lead to both a full PGCE award and Qualified Teacher Status.

There are many routes to becoming a teacher, so please make sure you know exactly which one you want before applying. Our Enquiries Team can help with any questions if you’re unsure.

Masters Awards

Our Masters courses are designed to build upon your undergraduate study and fully enhance your subject knowledge in specific areas. Our long-running MA courses in Education, Community Archaeology and Heritage Education are well established and offer opportunities for enhancement in well-defined subject areas. These have recently been joined by courses in English Literature, History, Theology and Health & Social Care Leadership, ensuring you have a wide range of options to choose from.

PhD & EdD

Studying for a Doctoral level qualification is one of the most exciting, stimulating and challenging things you can do. Our innovative doctoral programmes are designed to empower you as a professional educator to conduct robust research focused on the critical analysis of evidence, pushing back the boundaries of knowledge, developing policy and professional practice, and improving the quality of education as a whole.

Continuing Professional Development

Becoming a teacher researcher gives you the opportunity to continue to grow and develop yourself personally and professionally. You will be able to seek out improvements in practices which benefit not only your own areas but those within and beyond your own setting.

It’s important to know that the Selection Criteria will differ depending on the course or degree you have chosen, so make sure to check out what we’re looking for.
