New programme: BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance as Creative Practice
This October (2014) sees the launch of the first four-year, part-time BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance degree to be based in Central London.
Regular technique classes and choreographic workshops in specialist studios, underpinned by practice-based contextual subjects, this award prepares students to be articulate and creative dance artists with a vision to pursue a career in a range of directions, from performance, creative producing, education, curatorial practice to arts management.
Students maintain work commitments along side high quality training with inspiring international tutors who are artists at the forefront of dance today.
“The BBK course has given me the opportunity to set a path towards entering the world of dance and live performance. Furthermore it allowed me to make a smooth transition between careers due to its part-time nature.” Marios Ktorides (2010-12)
“The BBK course has given me the opportunity to engage with a rigorous critical artistic practice and has enabled me to deepen my relationship to, understanding of, and practice within, dance and contemporary performance.” Lewis Wheeler (2011-14)
New dance partners
Birkbeck’s Department of Media and Cultural Studies is delighted to announce two unique partnerships with The Place and Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures.
The Department will be working together with The Place, a world leading conservatoire for Contemporary dance training and Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, the UK’s premier contemporary dance/theatre touring company to deliver the Foundation Degree: Dance.
It is particularly exciting for our students to be working at a great institution and benefiting from the facilities and resources at The Place, as well as working closely with New Adventures’ artists. The Dance Programme also celebrates their core team of practitioner tutors who bring fresh ideas and uncompromising challenge to the enquiry of the body’s possibilities, dance making and the art of performance.
