The formal ceremony to install Professor Sir Christopher Frayling as the Arts University Bournemouth’s first Chancellor in 125 years took place at St James Church Poole on the 9th April 2014.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Stuart Bartholomew, CBE is delighted with the appointment and comments: “The Arts University Bournemouth is honoured to welcome Professor Sir Christopher Frayling as Chancellor.  Sir Christopher has had a distinguished career as former Rector of the Royal College of Art and Chair of the Arts Council England.  He has been a champion of specialist education in the arts and has done much to promote the relationship between specialist institutions of art and design and the creative industries. The academic community of staff and students look forward to the advocacy which Sir Christopher will provide and which will naturally extend beyond the ceremonial duties he will fulfil.”

The ceremonial procession of 150 dignitaries, academics and senior members of the university staff commenced from the Guildhall Poole at 3.00pm, with the ceremony itself taking place inside St James’ Church.

On his appointment and the ceremony, Sir Christopher Frayling said: “I am truly delighted to have been selected and installed as the first Chancellor of Arts University, Bournemouth. The ceremony was organised with real flair — with some of my favourite music and brand-new glittering robes — and the welcome could not have been warmer.

I’m particularly delighted because I believe passionately in what the University stands for — the best in art and design education, the importance of learning through ‘making’ and ‘doing’ as well as reading, the increasing significance of the creative industries to the  British economy and society, the concept of a university centred on the practical arts. So I shall look forward to being an ambassador for the university and shouting its achievements from as many rooftops as I can find…

The ceremony also awarded AUB Alumus and Humanitarian Photographer Giles Duley with an Honorary Master in Arts. Professor Sir Peter Cook and Professor Pamela Howard were also confirmed as Visiting Professors.
