Aberystwyth University Modern Languages

Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages. Aberystwyth has taught modern languages since 1874, and we continue to offer innovative learning opportunities. Currently we teach French, German, Italian and Spanish at both beginners’ and advanced levels, along with some Brazilian Portuguese, in a research-active academic environment.

As a department, we are 1st in the UK for French, top 5 for Spanish/ Iberian studies and within the top 10 for German studies (NSS, 2016). Much of the teaching is in small groups, which means you get a lot of personal attention and feedback, essential for effective language learning. All our degree schemes are four years, which includes a year spent abroad, usually at one of our partner universities or in employment, often teaching English at a school. The year abroad gives you a major advantage on the job market when you graduate, our students return with an increased skill set, stronger language competencies and the ability to adapt to any situations.

We pride ourselves on being a close-knit and friendly department. There is a vibrant multilingual and multicultural environment and many of our staff are native speakers of the language they teach, so you get plenty of exposure to in and outside the classroom.

We are located on the attractive Penglais campus, with fantastic views of the sea. The campus has a range of facilities within easy reach, the most important being the main University library, the Students’ Union Building and the award-winning Arts Centre. The National Library of Wales is only a ten minutes’ walk away. The Department itself provides students with a departmental workroom and a well-equipped Language Resource Centre.

As we teach languages from beginners level as well as post A- level you are not disadvantaged if you didn’t have the opportunity to learn a language at school – you can start learning it here and will have every opportunity and support to reach a high standard by the time you graduate.

We look forward to welcoming you here and showing you in person what we have to offer.

The main collection of books, journals and other printed materials for Modern Languages can be found in the Hugh Owen Library on Level F (top floor):
