Information Services, Abertay University

Information Services at Abertay provides support for teaching,  student learning and research in the university. The Librarians and Digital Skills Officer offer workshops and drop-in sessions on several topics including Microsoft Office Applications, formatting long documents, creating poster presentations, subject specific online library resources, LibrarySearch, referencing and using RefWorks to manage your references and create your bibliography.

What is referencing and why do I need to do it?

Referencing is a crucial part of academic writing. Referencing demonstrates your academic development and establishes authority, allowing you to support claims in your discussion.  It is very important to learn how to reference in order to avoid plagiarism.

There are two parts to referencing:

  • The citation or in-text citation. This identifies the reference in the text of your work and avoids plagiarism.
  • The reference list. At the end of your work, this is a detailed list of all references you have used allowing the reader to find your citations.

What referencing style should I use?

  • Students studying Law modules should use OSCOLA.
  • Students studying Psychology modules should use APA.
  • Students studying ALL other modules should use Abertay Harvard style.

Are there any tools to help with referencing?

RefWorks is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool, designed to help you easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies.

Where can I get help with referencing?

  • There is an online referencing tutorial for Abertay Harvard in Blackboard BBLRNZN as well as some additional information on the APA and OSCOLA referencing styles.
  • You can ask for help in person at the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) on Level 1 of the Library. You can also email library@abertay.ac.uk or telephone 01382 308833.
  • You can contact the Academic Librarian for your School for a one-to-one appointment.
  • You can come to the IT and Library drop-in sessions every Tuesday 11-12, Wednesday 12-1 and Thursday 3-4 in the IT Training Suite on level 2 of the Library.
